There are numerous islands in the inner Oslo Fjord, which can easily be reached by ferry from Oslo. One of our favorite islands is the small island of Gressholmen. With only 5 hectares in size, the island is not large, but since all motorized traffic is prohibited here and parts of the island are a nature reserve, you can find a lot of peace and relaxation here. But it has not been aleays as peaceful as today on this little island.
For a long time, the island served as a royal hunting ground. From 1927 to 1939, the island served as Oslo’s first seaplane airport until it was replaced by the Oslo Fornebu Airport, which opened in 1939. In addition to the airfield, there were also small factories on the islands, producing for example soap. Fortunately, the island is now only used as recreational area.
On our lastest visit in July, the weather is unfortunately not the best. Few visitors have found their way to the small island. We take a short hike from the ferry pier to the other side of the island. Passing through a small forest we soon reach the southern tip of the island, where we can observe bumblebees in a flower meadow as well as some ships, which pass by the island.
After spending quiet some time on the shroes of Oslo Fjord we stop at the small restaurant on the island, Gressholm Kro. While we wait for the ferry back to Oslo, we can watch a group of gray geese at the ferry pier, who are looking for food in the shallow water and then fly to the mainland. They will for sure like us soon return to this small island.
Im inneren Oslofjord liegen zahlreiche Inseln, welche man einfach mit einer Fähre von Oslo erreichen kann. Einer unserer Lieblingsinseln ist die kleine Insel Gressholmen (dt. Kleine Grasinsel). Mit nur 5 ha Grösse ist die Insel nicht gross, aber da jeglicher motorisierter Verkehr hier verboten ist und Teile der Insel ein Naturschutzgebiet sind findet man hier viel Ruhe und Erholung.
Ruhe und Erholung gab es nicht immer auf der Insel. Lange diente die Insel als königliches Jagdrevier. Von 1927 bis 1939 der erste Flugplatz für Wasserflugzeuge Oslos, bis er vom neu erbauten und 1939 eröffneten Flughafen Oslo-Fornebu abgelöst wurde. Neben dem Flugplatz gab es hier auch eine Seifenfabrik und einen Betrieb zur Herstellung von Lacken.
Heutzutage dient die Insel zum Glück nur noch der Naherholung der Bewohner Oslos. Bei unserem letzten Besuch im Juli ist das Wetter leider nicht das Beste. Nur wenige Besucher haben sich auf die kleine Insel verirrt. Wir unternehmen eine kleine Wanderung vom Fähranleger auf die andere Seite der Insel.
Durch einen kleinen Wald erreichen wir bald die Südspitze der Insel, wo wir neben einigen Schiffen, die die Insel passieren, in einer Blumenwiese Hummeln beobachten können. Lange sitzen wir am Ufer des Fjordes, bevor wir noch in das kleine Gasthaus auf der Insel, Gressholm Kro, einkehren.
Während wir auf die Fähre zurück nach Oslo warten, können wir am Fähranleger noch eine Gruppe von Graugänsen beobachten, die im seichten Wasser nach Nahrung suchen und dann zum Festland fliegen, wie wir aber bald nach Gressholmen zurückkehren werden.
