The small town in Eastern Norway is one of the coldest places in Norway in winter (up to -50 °C). During our visit of the small mining town of Roros in July, we are very lucky with the weather and can enjoy warm temperatures. From the 17th century until the end of the 1970s copper ore was mined there.

A walk through the old city center is like a journey through time. Starting from the impressive church, we walk through the narrow streets of the small center Bergstaden, with its many well-preserved, magnificent, wooden houses.

Many of the houses are under the protection of UNESCO. But the houses are not abandoned: today visitors can find hotels, cafes, houses, a pharmacy and many small shops in the houses, which were formerly home to the wealthier part of the inhabitants of Roros .

The mining museum Smelthytta and a huge slag heap, dominate the East part of the Old Town and are a testament to the huge amount of activity that has taken place over 333 years. You can climb the slag heap and enjoy a nice view of the small town. At the foot of the mountain we visit a number of small flat wooden houses, up to 250 years old, which were used by ordinary miners and their families.

On such a sunny day, it’s hard to imagine what life was like 250 years ago. As the days in summer in Norway are very long we decide to visit nearby Lake Femund.

20 years ago we have already visited the lake on a family vacation. The lake has a length of 60 km and a width of 5 km. The area around the Femundsee was first settled in the 17th century by the Sami people from Finnmark. Until today there are not many visitors to the lake and we can enjoy complete silence and seclusion. We take a little hike and let the day draw to a close on the shores of this magnificent lake.

Der kleine Ort Røros in Ostnorwegen zählt im Winter zu mit bis zu -50°C zu den kältesten Orten des Landes. Wir jedoch haben riesiges Glück, als wir den kleinen ehemaligen Bergbauort im Juli bei hochsommerlichen Temperaturen besuchen.

Die Geschichte der Stadt ist geprägt vom Bergbau. Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert bis Ende der 70er des vergangenen Jahrhunderts wurde dort Kupfererz abgebaut. Ein Spaziergang durch den alten Stadtkern, ist wie eine Zeitreise. Beginnend an der beeindruckenden Kirche laufen wir durch die engen Straßen des kleinen Zentrum Bergstaden, mit seinen vielen gut erhaltenen, zum teil prachtvollen, Holzhäusern.

Viele der Häuser stehen unter dem Schutz der UNESCO. Aber die Häuser sind nicht etwa verlassen: hier gibt es Hotels, Cafés, Wohnhäuser, eine Apotheke und viele kleine Geschäfte. Früher haben hier die wohlhabenden Bewohner des Ortes gelebt. Im Ort liegt auch das Bergbaumuseum Smelthytta und ein riesiger Schlackenberg, welche Zeuge der Geschichte des Ortes sind.

Den Schlackenberg können Besucher erklimmen und haben von dort oben einen schöne Aussicht über Røros. Zu Füssen des Berges befinden sich noch heute die bis zu 250 Jahre alten kleinen flachen Holzhäuser der einfachen Bergarbeiter. An einem so sonnigen Tag ist es schwer vorstellbar wie das Leben hier wohl vor 250 Jahren gewesen sein mag.

Da die Tage im Sommer in Norwegen sehr lang sind entschliessen wir uns noch den nahegelegenen Femundsee zu besuchen. Bereits vor 20 Jahren haben wir den See auf einem Familienurlaub besucht.

Der See besitzt eine Länge von 60 km sowie eine Breite von 5 km. Das Gebiet um den Femundsee wurde erst im 17. Jahrhundert durch Samen aus der Finnmark besiedelt. Wie vor 20 Jahren herrscht hier absolute Ruhe und Einsamkeit. Wir unternehmen eine kleine Wanderung und lassen den Tag am Ufer des Sees ausklingen.
