Our hike to Ulsanbawi Rock in Seoraksan National Park, one of the most famous national parks in South Korea, starts at Sinheungsa Temple, with its famous Buddha statue. The temple of Korean Zen Buddhism was, like many other temples, built by the Korean monk Jajang, around 600 AD.
It was twice destroyed by fire and rebuilt. For more than ten years temple visitors donated for the construction of a Buddha statue expressing the longing for a reunification of North and South Korea. The seated bronze Buddha sits on a pedestal, so that its total height is 18.9 meters.
It is still quiet in the national park early in the morning. From the temple we hike along a river and through dense forests. Here we can really enjoy the peace and beauty of nature. After about 3 km we reach the Heundeulbawi Rock, a huge boulder that can be moved by human strength, and the temple Gyejoam.
A grotto, which is part of the temple, houses beautiful Buddha figures. As we enter the grotto a religious ceremony is taking place, in which we can participate. The songs of the monk still accompany us on our way to Ulsanbawi Rock.
We continue steeply uphill through dense forests. The rushing of the stream, the wind in the trees and the light of the sun almost make us fall into a meditative state. From time to time we get a glimps of Ulsanbawi Rock.
The last part of the walk leads over steep stairs along the walls of Ulsanbawi Rock. Sweaty but happy we reach the summit and the viewing platform. In one direction we can admire the mountain peaks of Seoraksan, in the other direction we look into the vast lowlands, the city of Sokcho and the east coast of South Korea.
