As we approach the Tooth Temple, we can already hear monks recite sacred texts. The temple is located in the Chinese quarter of Singapore, which stuns its visitors with its architecture in the style of the Tang Dynasty. Hundreds of red lanterns and flower garlands adorn the multistory building. Large iron cauldrons filled with sand and holding burning incense sticks stand in front of the entrance to the temple.

The temple opened in 2007 and houses a tooth of Buddha, found in 1980 in a collapsed stupa in Arakan (Myanmar). It was moved to Singapore in 2002.

Upon entering the first hall, we are overwhelmed by the sight of the numerous Buddha, Bodhisattva and wax figures in front of which the Buddhist devotees are gathered for a ceremony. It is conducted by several Buddhist monks sitting underneath three large golden statues at the front end of the hall.

The overwhelming splendor of the temple also fills the upper floors. In the hall of the 100 dragons on the first floor of the building visitors and believers can admire hundreds of Buddha statues and in the adjoining hall of Avalokitesvara a Bodhisattva for each zodiac sign of Chinese astrology.

On the third floor, one can marvel at an impressive collection of Buddhist art presented according to the life cycle of Buddha. But first the Sacred Light Hall on the fourth floor contains the temple’s centrepiece. The Buddha Tooth Relic is housed in a giant stupa weighing a 3500 kilograms and made from 320 kilograms of gold, of which 234 kilograms were donated by devotees.

Many people kneel in front of the relic chamber or even meditate. An oasis of silence can also be found on the roof garden of the temple. In the 10000 Buddha pavilion, which stands in a lush garden, devotees turn a huge, colorfully painted prayer wheel. The steady sound of the spinning prayer wheel, the chirping of birds from the garden make us forget for a moment that we are in one of the most buzzling cities of Southeast Asia.

Schon von Weitem hören wir Gläubige und Mönche heilige Texte rezitieren. Die Stimmen, die von einem Gong und Glocken untermalt werden, kommen aus dem großen Tempel im chinesischen Viertel von Singapur, der durch seine Architektur im Stil der Tang Dynastie besticht. Hunderte roten Lampions und Blumengirlanden zieren das mehrstöckige, rotweiße Gebäude. Große Kessel gefüllt mit Sand und brennenden Räucherstäbchen stehen vor den Eingängen.

Der Tempel wurde 2007 eröffnet und beherbergt einen Zahn Buddhas, der 1980 in einem zusammengebrochenen Stupa in Arakan (Myanmar) gefunden wurde und 2002 nach Singapur gelangte.

Schon beim Betreten der ersten Halle sind wir schier überwältigt vom Anblick der zahlreichen Buddha-, Bodhisattva- und Wachsfiguren, vor denen sich die buddhistischen Gläubigen zu einer Zeremonie versammelt haben.

Geleitet wird diese von mehreren buddhistischen Mönchen die unter den drei großen goldenen Statuen an der Stirnseite der Halle sitzen. Die überwältigende Pracht setzt sich in den oberen Stockwerken fort. In der Halle der 100 Drachen im ersten Stock des Gebäudes sitzen hundert Buddhas und in der anschließenden Avalokitesvarahalle ein Bodhisattva für jedes Tierkreiszeichen der chinesischen Astrologie.

In der dritten Etage kann man eine eindrucksvolle Sammlung buddhistischer Kunst bestaunen, die entsprechend des Lebenszyklus von Buddha präsentiert wird. Alle Gläubige und auch uns zieht es in den vierten Stock des Gebäudes. Hier kann man in einer prächtig geschmückten Halle den goldenen Stupa bestaunen, in dem der Zahn Buddhas liegt. Viele Menschen verharren hier in stiller Meditation oder beten knieend vor dem Heiligtum.

Eine Oase der Stille finden wir auf dem Dachgarten des Tempels. Im 10000 Buddhapavillion, der in einem üppigen Garten steht, drehen Gläubige eine riesige, bunt bemalte Gebetstrommel. Das gleichmäßige Geräusch, das bei der Drehung entsteht und die Vogelstimmen aus dem Garten lassen uns kurzzeitig vergessen, dass wir in einer südostasiatischen Großstadt sind.
