Ice cold wind blows and it starts snowing as we approach the most colourful church of St. Petersburg: the Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ or the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, as it is also known for.

With multi-coloured onion domes reminiscent of St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood is a breathtaking sight both outside and within its ornately decorated walls. In fact, the construction of the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood originally began in 1883 by Tsar Alexander III to commemorate his father, Alexander II. Alexander II was actually assassinated on the site where the church was built in 1881.

From the beginning, the new Tsar, Alexander III, did not plan the church as a church, but as a memorial. Designed by Alfred Parland in the style of 16^th and 17^th-century Russian churches, the Church of the Resurrection provides a stark contrast to its surroundings of Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture. Aleksander III did not only intend to build a memorial but also wanted to set a sign against the western architecture, which he felt was contaminating the city.

Beautiful on the outside the church is even more beautiful on the inside. It simply takes your breath away when you enter the church. The interior of the church is densely adorned with 7000 square metres of vivid mosaics created by world famous Russian artists. The majority of the mosaics depict biblical scenes and saints though some are just patterns. The colourful onion domes, of which the central one reaches a height of 81 meters are covered with bright enamels.

It is almost a miracle that the building still exists today. Since it was designed as a memorial church, it never served liturgical purposes. In the beginning it was used as a concert hall, theatre and museum. The church was demolished several times in the Soviet era and then served as storage facility for food. For decades, the church was closed to the public. During World War II, one of the golden domes was hit by a bomb, which luckily did not explode. The bomb was found in 1961 and defused. In August 1997, the Church Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ was reopened after restoration work and now serves as a mosaic museum.

Ein eisiger Wind weht am Ufer des Gribojedow-Kanals und es beginnt zu schneien, als wir uns der wohl farbenprächtigsten Kirche von Sankt Petersburg nähern, der Erlöserkirche, Auferstehungskirche oder Blutkirche.

Der Bau besticht von außen vor allem durch seine bunten Zwiebeltürme, goldenen Dächer und farbenfrohen Mosaiken. Die Kirche wurde von Zar Alexander III. in Auftrag gegeben. Er ließ die Kirche in Erinnerung an seinen Vater, Zar Alexander II., errichten, der genau an dieser Stelle, auf dem Weg zum Winterpalast, am 1. März 1881 einem Bombenanschlag zum Opfer fiel.

Von Anfang an, plante der neue Zar die Kirche nicht als Gotteshaus, sondern als Gedenkstätte. Alexander III. schrieb daher einen Wettbewerb aus und beauftragte Alfred Parland mit dem Bau der Erlöserkirche im altrussischen Stil. Er wollte damit ein Zeichen gegen die westliche Architektur der Stadt setzen. Als Vorbild diente dem Architekten die berühmte Basiliuskathedrale auf dem Roten Platz in Moskau. Zwanzig Schrifttafeln an der Kirche halten die politischen Taten des ermordeten Zaren Alexander II. fest.

Die äußere Pracht des Baus, setzt sich für uns auch im Gebäude fort. Als wir das Kircheninnere betreten verschlägt es uns den Atem. Wir wissen gar nicht wo wir zuerst hinsehen sollen. Das Kircheninnere ist auf 7000 m² vollständig mit Mosaiken im Ikonenstil aus mehr als zwanzig Gesteinsarten ausgeschmückt. Dazu dienten Vorlagen mehrerer russischer Maler in verschiedensten Kunstrichtungen. Die prächtige Ikonostase macht den Eindruck noch perfekt.

Dass die Kirche heute noch steht grenzt für uns an ein Wunder. Da sie als Memorialkirche konzipiert wurde, diente sie nie liturgischen Zwecken. Zu Beginn wurde sie als Konzerthalle, Theater und Museum genutzt. Die Erlöserkirche sollte in der sowjetischen Zeit mehrfach niedergerissen werden und diente dann aber als Kartoffellager. Jahrzehntelang blieb die Kirche für die Öffentlichkeit geschlossen. Während des zweiten Weltkriegs wurde eine der goldenen Kuppeln von einer Bombe getroffen, die aber nicht explodierte. Sie wurde erst 1961 gefunden und entschärft. Im August 1997 wurde die Erlöserkirche nach Restaurierungsarbeiten als Mosaikmuseum wiedereröffnet.
