Hike to Horn (406m) in Selvellir (Iceland) — Wanderung zum Horn (406m) im Selvellir (Island)

We stand on a hill covered by brown grass and enjoy the majestic view of Berserkjahraun, a lava field dotted with small volcanic cones. This area is part of the volcanic Selvellir area on Snæfellsnes peninsula near the small settlement of Stykkishólmur.

Clouds cover the nearby mountains and it drizzles a bit from time to time. On this late evening in June it is only us and a few sheep in this majestic Icelandic landscape. We set out for a hike to Horn, a small summit with 406 meters. The way leads us through mostly unpathed terrain.

Soon the brown meadows give way to a bizarre but unique landscape. A small stream runs through the green landscape, which is covered by moss pads. It has its source beneath a nearby bizarrely shaped tuff rock.

We follow the steep small path across a field of loose lava rock. The higher we get, the more impressive the view of the surrounding landscape gets.

Snow-capped mountains, small lakes and the especially the play of colors of the sun breaking through the clouds really fascinate us. From the top we enjoy the stunning view and the breathtaking Icelandic nature.

Wir stehen auf einer von braunem Gras bedeckten Anhöhe über dem kleinen See Selvallavatn und sehen staunend auf das von kleinen Vulkankegeln durchsetzte Lavafeld Berserkjahraun.

Es ist Teil des vulkanischen Gebiets Selvellir auf Snæfellsnes bei Stykkishólmur. Graue Wolken stauen sich an den höheren Bergen am Horizont. Ab und zu regnet es ein wenig. Am diesem späten Juniabend sind außer uns nur noch einige Schafe unterwegs.

Eine kleine Wanderung führt uns durch wegloses Gelände zum Horn, einem kleinen Gipfel mit 406 Metern. Schon bald weichen die braunen Wiesen einer bizarren, aber einzigartigen Landschaft. Zwischen riesigen, grün leuchtenden Moospolstern schlängelt sich ein kleiner Bach zwischen schwarzen Felsen in einem orangenen Bachbett den Berg hinunter.

Er entspringt einer Quelle zwischen bizarr geformten Tufffelsen. Der Weg führt nun steil bergan über lockeres Lavagestein. Je höher wir kommen, desto beeindruckender wird die Aussicht auf die umliegende Landschaft. Schneebedeckte Berge, kleine Seen, die Wolken am Himmel und das besondere Wechselspiel der Farben, wenn die Sonne kurz durch die Wolken bricht.

Kurz vor unserem Ziel, dem Horn überziehen Tuffsteinplatten das Gipfelplateau, immer wieder unterbrochen von gelbbraunen Moospolstern und einzelnen aufrecht stehenden Tufffelsen, die durch die Erosion einen einzigartigen Schliff bekommen haben.
