It is freezing cold on this early morning in Tromsø as we wait for the MS Kong Harald to dock at the harbor, taking us on a southbound cruise to Trondheim. Opposite the harbor we can still see the illuminated Arctic Cathedral and Storsteinen, the local mountain of Tromsø, which we climbed that afternoon.

There are only a few other passengers waiting with us, waiting to board the ship. The MS Kong Harald stops at Tromso only for a short time before it heads south torwards Vesterålen, a group of islands in the North Atlantic.

The nights in the far north are still long and the sun rises not far over the horizon. Right after sunrise we are on deck and are swept away by the stunning landscape and the magical light of the rising sun. Steep, snow-capped mountains seem to rise directly out of the sea.

Small places with colorful houses nestle in small bays. Small fishing boats cross our path, often accompanied by seagulls. The sea is smooth as a mirror.  That is so stunning that it almost feels surreal.

In the evening light we pass the border between Vesterålen and Lofoten. The sun sets behind the famous archipelago of Lofoten Islands. In the north of Norway, it does not get dark immediately in the winter, but sunset is followed by a long-lasting twilight.

During this so called blue hour we pass through the Raftsund and the neighboring Trollfjord, a two-kilometer side branch of the sound. Its name derives from the trolls, the magic beings of Norse mythology, who seem to be omnipresent in this unique landscape. Shortly after leaving Stamsund, the last port of call on Lofoten Islands, Northern Lights appear almost like a farewell.

Um kurz vor zwei stehen wir in dieser Februarnacht bei minus sieben Grad  am Hafen von Tromsø und sehen schon von weiten unser Boot, die MS Kong Harald,  kommen. Gegenüber am anderen Ufer des Tromsøysund können wir noch die beleuchtete Eismeerkathedrale und den Storstein, den Hausberg von Tromsø, den wir am Nachmittag bestiegen haben, sehen.

Mit uns stehen zu dieser späten Stunde nur wenige andere Passagiere am Kai und  warten endlich an Bord des Schiffs gehen zu können. Die MS Kong Harald der Hurtigruten hält  hier nur kurz  und nimmt in tiefer Dunkelheit eine halbe Stunde später Fahrt in Richtung Süden auf,  mit dem Ziel der Vesterålen, einer Inselgruppe im Nordatlantik.

Die Nächte im hohen Norden sind noch lang und die Sonne kommt nicht weit über den Horizont. Aber im tiefen Winter taucht sie die Landschaft in ein zauberhaftes und atemberaubendes Licht. Kurz nach Sonnenaufgang stehen wir an Deck und können uns nicht satt sehen an der norwegischen Inselwelt.

Steile, schneebedeckte Berge ragen direkt aus dem Meer empor. Kleine Orte mit bunten Häusern schmiegen sich in kleinen Buchten. Kleine Fischerboote kreuzen auf dem nahezu spiegelglatten Meer unseren Weg, oft begleitet von riesigen Möwenschwärmen. Eine Landschaft, die so traumhaft ist, dass sie fast schon nicht mehr real erscheint.

Im Abendlicht passieren wir die Grenze zwischen den Vesterålen und den Lofoten. Die Sonne taucht glutrot hinter der Lofotenwand ins Meer. In Nordnorwegen wird es  im Winter nicht sofort dunkel, sondern es folgt ein lang andauerndes Zwielicht, indem wir den Raftsund mit dem Trollfjord passieren, einen zwei Kilometer langen Seitenarm des Sunds, mit einer nur 100m breiten Einfahrt.

Sein Name leitet sich von den Trollen ab, den Zauberwesen der nordischen Mythologie, die uns im hohen Norden in dieser einzigartigen Natur allgegenwärtig erscheinen. Kurz nach dem Ablegen in Stamsund, dem letzten Hafen der Lofoten, scheint die Magie der Trolle nochmal zu wirken, denn über den Lofoten erscheinen wie zum Abschied grün leuchtende Polarlichter.
